WELCOME!
In 1983, after several months of designing the course and working with VDOT and the Board of Supervisors to secure permission to close Garth Road, Mark and Cynthia Lorenzoni, along with the help of the Charlottesville Track Club, kicked off the area’s first all-women’s race.
That first Four Miler was a big success, but none of us ever imagined that the race would grow to where it is today!
Not only has the event's popularity skyrocketed over the years, but the emotional connection women feel for this event has grown intensely as well. When I ran my first Four Miler in 2010, the event filled up within days (I was thrilled to get in through the wait list). I still remember pulling into Foxfield on race day. Scores of volunteers expertly pointed me to a parking space in the vast grassy field. As the sun rose over the Blue Ridge and I made my way to the starting line, I could barely get my head around the labor of love that was unfolding all around me. This was my introduction to the Charlottesville running community, and I was hooked.
I have run this event for twelve consecutive years and it is always a highlight of the late-summer season. Every year, I'm inspired by the hundreds of women who may be participating in their first race, walking with a group in their customized matching t-shirts, chasing a personal best time, or even waging their own battle against breast cancer. I grin at Pam Whorley and her Pink Ladies cheering even while I tackle the long, gradual hill by the Hunt Country Store. And I can't help but get choked up while passing the Motivational Mile, a stretch of the course that honors loved ones that have experienced breast cancer. From the mother-daughter teams to the groups of UVA students, from the first-time walkers to the competitive local speedsters, I haven't seen another local event that fosters this deep sense of community while also fundraising for a vitally important local cause.
Now, I am honored to serve as volunteer Race Director for this special event, with the invaluable guidance of the Lorenzonis and the Charlottesville Track Club, and with the help of hundreds of volunteers and my hard-working race committee. They have given countless volunteer hours to assure that you have a special race experience. Good luck, have fun, and we’ll see you at the finish!
